History Of Vitafoam
Vitafoam Products Limited was established In May 1967 as Vitafoam East Africa Limited (an associate Of British Vita of UK) and later as Vitafoam Kenya Limited under the British Vita Patent Rights.
The company started its first operations in Mombasa in a mere 5,000 sq. ft. in one corner of a plastic factory which was originally built as a coffee warehouse. With its quality products, it grew rapidly and became a household name in the bedding and furniture industry. With a successful business environment and under an expansion program, it opened its branch in 1970 in Nairobi on Bamburi Road, Industrial Area to cater for the upcountry market. The tremendous success of Nairobi branch led to the shift of the headquarters from Mombasa to Nairobi. The Mombasa factory has to date remained a branch.
However, British Vita in 1989 resolved to disinvest and sell the shares of the company to indigenous Kenyans. This opportunity was taken by present owner of the company, Mr. Chandrakant P Shah who took over the company as Chairman and renamed it “Vitafoam Products limited”. Mr. C P Shah along with his wife, late Mrs. Ramilaben Chandrakant Shah (Managing Director until her demise in January 2001) decided to expand the company and relocated the premises to its present modern location on Mombasa Road, Nairobi in 1992.
Under a new investment plan, plant technology was upgraded and new machinery and equipment replaced the old ones in order to increase efficiency and better capacity utilization of the plant to meet the ever increasing demand for its quality products. The company was amongst the first foam manufacturing companies in East Africa region with the latest State-of-Art Technology. Product Quality maintenance from the onset led the company to receiving the prestigious “Diamond Mark of Quality” from the Kenya Bureau of Standards in 1996, making it the first foam company to get the award.
